Oldfield Old Boys 14pts – Nailsea & Backwell 24pts
Having played the majority of this seasons games at home, Nailsea went on the road to Oldfield in Bath to test their away form. It was Oldfield however that went into an early lead with a converted try from a lineout drive.
With the tackles and collisions being fiercely contested, there came an unsavoury moment when Nailsea Captain, Luke Sharp, was head butted leaving the referee no choice but to red card the Oldfield offender.
Nailsea then went on the attack and from a quickly taken penalty, which saw Scrum Half and Man of the Match, Jamie Sullivan, crashed over for Nailsea’s first try.
Good positional kicking from Sullivan and Full Back, Joe Reed, saw Nailsea in possession and attacking the Oldfield line. Sullivan then gathered his brace of tries with a fine dummy and dive for the line. The conversion extras were added by Reed to make the half time score 7-12.
Despite being a man down, Oldfield put up a spirited defence to hold out Nailsea for the third quarter. From a scrum 10m out from the Oldfield line, the ball was moved through the hands with Second Row, Mike Frohlich, providing a sublime off load for Centre, Ryan Love, to finish a fine backs move 7-17.
This was followed by arguably the move of the match. The Nailsea backs ‘found the corner’ of the Oldfield defence for Winger, Ben Perfect, to run in under the posts for the bonus point try, converted by Reed 7-24.
Oldfield responded almost immediately with a try of their own to make the score 14-24.
Although Nailsea were unlucky not to add to their tally at the death, with Will Marley and Jamie Sullivan being held up over the line after superb handling by forwards and backs, Nailsea ran out deserved winners at 14-24.
Next week Nailsea are at home to St Bernadettes with kick-off at 14.30hrs.
