Match Report - N&B U18's 24 - 19 Royal Wootton Bassett U18's

Another gritty win from Nailsea and Backwell U18s

Nailsea U18’s were made to work hard for their win by a well-established side from Royal Wootton Bassett.

The visiting side made the long trip to the Ravens Nest to be met by heavy rain and, at some points, driving hail. Nailsea have never played this opposition before so didn’t know what to expect from a team that has historically put out two colts squads and has enjoyed some success in their various cup and league competitions.

This pedigree soon came to the fore when Nailsea were caught on the hop as RWB went over for the first converted try of the day following some heavy driving around the fringes of the breakdown.

The score against them jolted the young Ravens into upping their intensity and a close range try from flanker Dan Hill took the score to 7-5.

Nailsea sustained the pressure following this early exchange and were granted a series of penalties for breakdown infringements. Eventually the pressure applied to the RWB line became too strong and 2nd row Owen Wright went over for the first of his three tries of the afternoon, converted by Full Back James Warren.

RWB hit back with two tries of their own, but strong running into the central heart of the defence by Wright and Captain Evan Williams lead to two further tries from Wright and a lead that RWB couldn’t surmount. Credit also has to go to the half back pairing of Connor Mobbs and Sam Chidzey who controlled possession and territory brilliantly with decision making that belied their years to ensure we played our rugby in all the right areas of the pitch.

Final score in an excellent game was 24-19.

Next Friday 8th October Nailsea U18’s travel to Dings Crusaders to play under floodlights on their 4G pitch. Travelling support would be very welcome for the 19:15 kick off at Shaftesbury Park.
