With four bonus point wins from four games in the opening encounters of the season Nailsea were looking to continue their current form.
The weather had really turned over the past week and the question was, could the running rugby we ideally want to see from Nailsea be possible in such challenging conditions.
Wells won the toss and decided to play up the slope in the first half with Nailsea kicking off. Nailsea were camped in the Well 22 for the majority of the first half with lots of opportunities to get the scoring started but handling errors and mis-timed line out kept putting pay to that.
Wells defence held strong until a few good carries from the forwards took Nailsea to within 10 metres and opened up the blind side. Two quick passes from the 4 and 6 saw the ball move into the waiting hands of Hooker Harvey Flower to go over in the corner. 5-0.
The score offered up a little comfort for the home side and they started to carry and surge forward with more gusto ensuring they made the most of the slope in the first half. Following further strong carries from the forward pack and good handling of the ball in the abating rain, Harry Marshall out-paced his opposite man to score in the corner. This was convert by Jamie Elswood. 12-0.
Nailsea increased the pace of the game and shortly afterwards came the third try as Luke Sharp smashed over from short range. 19-0.
Following a pressure line out on their own five metre line, Wells could not get the ball away and had to dab down in the own try area resulting in a five metre scrum to Nailsea. With an almighty drive, Nailsea pushed Wells over for Luke Caswell to score the Bonus point score. With the final kick of the half Jamie Elswood added the extras. 26-0 Half Time.
Nailsea kept Wells under pressure for the start of the second half. Against the run of play though, following a mis-timed pass, Wells scooped up the ball for their Centre to run in from half way to open their account. 26-7.
Nailsea continued to apply the pressure and Wells did a great job of hold firm. The next try came from another scrum which was heading for the try line when it was deemed that Wells collapsed this and a penalty try was awarded. 33-7.
With time ticking away there was one last opportunity as Nailsea repeatedly picked and went close to Wells. The defence did a tremendous job of holding firm, but following some quick hands Sam Cook score a try under the posts which was again converted by Jamie Elswood. Final score 40-7.
The perfect record of five bonus point wins from five games was intact! Next week Nailsea travel to Minehead for a top of the table clash.
